Book Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen? (Jimmy Olsen (2019-)) Review :

Jimmy Olsen was sort of an impulse buy based on the whimsical cover that seemed to harken back to the fun of the Silver Age. I had never heard of writer Matt Fraction, but I later learned he came over from Marvel when Brian Michael Bendis jumped ship. Fraction is definitely not trying to recreate the feel of the Silver Age, which disappointed me a bit at first, but it’s clear he was carving out his own niche, which is probably a better route to go down.I wasn’t loving Jimmy Olsen for the first few issues. The plot was surprisingly complicated for a silly Jimmy Olsen story and some of the humor was flying over my head because it was so subtle. Fraction was writing his story non sequentially and I initially didn’t recognize that he was doing it, so I found myself very confused. I was also struggling to figure out what tone Fraction was going for. The art by Steve Lieber was certainly lighthearted but the story seemed like it might be a bit more serious. Or was it?It was with issue #3 that things started falling into place. I finally got Fraction’s humor and understood that he was knitting some kind of tapestry, but with a jumbled up ordering. It was a story with attention deficit disorder, but beneath it all was a coherent plot that simply asked the reader to attach all the pieces and these pieces were strewn over a dozen issues. I love mysteries where the reader is able to be part of the investigation and Fraction does a great job in setting things up.You have to pay close attention and repeat readings really help, but there is a very interesting story here. Basically, Jimmy Olsen is trying to solve a series of murders that include his own. Meanwhile, he’s involved in all sorts of hijinks including running a podcast where he acts as an irritating prankster named Timmy Olsen, who often torments Batman. He has an alien wife and Fraction even creates a brother for Jimmy named Julien. In fact, Fraction creates a whole ton of new lore for Jimmy including a generations old feud between the Olsen’s and Luthor’s and the revelation that the Olsen’s are an exceedingly wealthy family.Jimmy Olsen had some very weak sales figures and the numbers continued to drop throughout its run. On the other hand, it consistently scored well with professional reviewers with an average aggregate score of 8.9 on ComicBookRoundup for the 12 issues and an even better 9.1 aggregate User Rating. I’m not buying the TPB because I have all 12 issues and even sprung for a bunch of the variant covers. Such is my love for the series. If they ever come out with a hardcover or *gasp* a Deluxe Edition I’d be all over that but as it stands, I’ll stick with my individual issues.
Someone's trying to kill Jimmy Olsen...a lot of people are trying to kill Jimmy Olsen, but one in particular sends him into hiding and in search of who is really behind what's happening to him. Along the way he's going to meet friend and foe alike as he seeks to find out the truth. This book is a hoot as it pays tribute to all of the insane whackiness Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen has gotten himself into, in many ways hearkening back to the Silver Age of comics. It's filled with all sorts of outrageous over the top characters and situations, and humorous adventures. They even find an effective way to recast Jimmy in the 21st Century media culture...as the insane over the top vlogger whose constant antics draw enough worldwide advertising hits to keep business coming to the Planet. That said, the book is hard to follow at times. It jumps in around in time and location and it can be hard to ell whether it's just doing an homage over a situation is plot-relevant. Still, because the book doesn't take itself too seriously, it doesn't matter quite as much. It's a whacky fun read and if that's what you're in the mood for, this will hit the spot.
