It took me a moment to work up the nerve to write this review. One because I didn't know how, and two because be still my heart this book wrecked me. I had MASSIVE book hangover by the end of this. But in the best way possible. Let me TRY to explain.I'm a character-driven reader so if the characters suck it's all over for me. But oh my d*mn did I love these characters. Aiden is the swooniest of swoony doms ever. He's hot and broody but he's also painfully kind and sweet in all the ways that counts and is important. He's a great friend and loves so intensely. Even if he has a hard time admiting it. I can totally picture him being one of those people who when you call them sweet rolls their eyes and says they're not. I loved him, still do. And I loved watching him grow and open up and learn to experience life again. It was really nice to see a Dom grow for a change. Aiden's not perfect. He's only a man and he's hurting a good chunk of this book. But God if he isn't amazing here.Speaking of subs, ohmigod Finley you sweet little cinnamon roll of a human. I adored him, absolutely adored him. He never lost what made him, him if you will. He never lost his desire to live and be happy. Yes it was Aiden in control and yes Finley attained a lot of who he was because of Aiden's care and teaching. But while Finley did grow as a person and a sub, he stayed who he was at his core. He would lose himself in submission and in Aiden but he never lost himself TO it all. He's a functional, happy adult. Which again, nice change of pace.In many ways, I think Finley did more for Aiden than Aiden did for him. Don't get me wrong. Aidan gave Finley life and the world. A chance to explore submission healthily and fully. That's important and meaningful. But because of Findlay, Aiden learned to feel again. That's pretty important too. They both changed for the better but Finley staying who he was and only getting stronger throughout the book told a better story in my mind then if this had been another perfect Dom teaches broken boy.The story itself is beautiful. It's 100% a character-driven, slice of life, love story so if you're looking for action and drama you're not really going to get that here. However, if you ARE looking for smut then mama are you home but they make bunnies look like prudes.The smut is hot, Kinky, and frequent. I'm here for it! And it's made all the better because Riley Hart has a really good grasp of D/s relationships. There's a clear difference between punishment and funishment as well as a scene and just intimacy between the parties. So while yes there is a lot of smut (and it is hotter than is legal) it's all different and plays a role in advancing the story.It's needed to see Finley blossom in his submission. It's needed to see how Aiden grows and opens up in his care for Finley. Plus everything is always SSC, RACK and filled to the brim with aftercare. Meticulous care was taken into crafting this book. Nothing was frivolous or just there to be there. So the smut, while very important to me to have and to hold, was also important here.Let's talk about the writing for a bit because it needs to be praised. It's beautiful. Flat out. It's so well done and honest and raw. It's told in duel perspective first person narrative so we really get to know the characters and SEE them. I loved SEEING Aiden through Finley's eyes and I adored SEEING Finley through Aiden's eyes. I saw them fall for each other. I FELT it. Like the beach scene. That will forever be one of my favorite scenes in a book. Or Aiden's insistence on Finley having his own money and going to school. Perfection. And don't even get me started on the epilogue. Y'all already know how unnecessary I find epilogues to be most of the time but here, it was the icing on a already decedent cake.My point is I wasn't just told that they cared for each other, I saw it. This is why I love D/s romances. They're intense and raw and consuming. This book reminded me of why I love this subgenre.I sound really dramatic which is partly me being me but mostly because this book is that good. The relationship is healthy, character development is on point, and the smut is hotter than a ghost pepper sittin' on the pavement in Texas in August. My one complaint is that this is now my standard. I'm ruined. 20 stars because it's only February and I already know this is going to be in my top five favorite books of the year. Hats off to you Riley Hart. You've officially become a one-click. This is probably the hardest review I've ever had to write and there's no way to express what I think about it without spoilers. I love M/M books and Riley Hart is one of my, if not my, favorite authors. I've read everything she has written or co-written. Her writing style is always exceptional, her characters well-developed, and her editing done well. All that holds true in this book. What I have issues with is her deviation from M/M romance into deep BDSM. I knew from her blurb this would go there but chose it anyway because...duh..it's Riley Hart. Granted, I just never have been able to understand it, but light BDSM doesn't bother me at all. This is far from light. What started as Sir/boy between a needy impressionable virgin still in his teens and an experienced Dom old enough to be his father ended up in hard core BDSM. Although the relationship developed over time, I felt Aidan used Finley's love and devotion to get what he wanted. Young impressionable Finley had only ever seen it in porn and related servitude with belonging when they met and he was so blinded by the first person ever to show him kindness and structure he would have done anything Aidan wanted, and did. Just be warned, it's all in here, spanking, flogging, servitude, belts, nipple clamps, public sex, sharing, water sports. Granted, as far as doms go, Aidan was a good one but no matter how pretty the words were he was still selfish and manipulative. And, no matter how pretty the words were, it left me feeling nasty. I guess if Riley's future books continue in this direction I'll have to find another favorite author. One star because it was written by Riley Hart, one star for for editing, one star for a plot that could have been so, so good if it had been toned down a little.
